Personal:

Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better."  Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

Been over a week since my last update. The neurontin, nerve med, has been effective. I have almost no leg pain and numbness. No lifting, bending and twisting. Back is still pretty tight and stiff but at this rate I should be able to start low impact stuff in another week. The key will be if the leg pain stays away after the neurontin runs out.

Visited the doc on Friday. Things checked out. My left leg strength is still diminished and no reflex on the left side. Doc said that I may never get full or any reflex back. If I understood correctly, he said that the brain has a way of bypassing injured areas to compensate. It basically rewires communication when it is forced to. Amazing. The big news is that I can start low impact exercise now and then running in another couple of weeks. His PA is an ultra runner and after the exam we talked running and he shared a couple of his favorite trails near Bogus Basin. Can't wait to try them out later on this spring and summer.

Saturday: Hit the gym for some light strength training, core work, and 30 mins of elliptical. Worked up a good sweat. This would've been an easy day under normal circumstances but the layoff has been really costly. Feel like I'm starting over from where I was at in late '07. Oh well, I did it before so I know I can do it again. And so it begins........
