Personal:

Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better."  Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

Visited my primary doc last week. No stress fractures but likely piriformis.  I have been doing some stretching, icing and resting it.  Went to the gym and did 40 easy mins on the TM + some strength training.  Started out tight but got better, not worse.  Very encouraged.

Easy TM run.  Extended the run to 45 mins.  Felt OK but my VO2 has suffered greatly due to my relatively short (3-4 wk) layoff- that and the extra 15 lbs I've put on since October.

5 easy miles on a hotel TM.  Still taking it easy. Had a much harder time keeping even a slow pace, either that or the TM was not calibrated correctly, very likely.

Strength training + easy run on TM. Taking it slow and trying to build up strength in the whole chain from the ankle to the glute.

Visited PT this morning. Developed a strength training and stretching plan to get my PF and Piriformis issues under control.  Slow 20 mins on the TM + 10 mins on the stationary bike + single leg extensions + single leg presses.

Easy run on TM w/ some strides mixed in + 3 sets of single leg extensions & single leg presses.  Cardio is starting to come back but the soreness in the glute and hammie just never goes away.  Rehab continues.

Alternating 5 min. Easy + 5 min. fast on TM.  Single leg extensions + single leg presses.  Just not getting rid of this soreness.  What I'd give to run completely pain-free!?!

Continuing the long, slow march back to good health.  Starting my New Year's resolution early by undergoing a sugar detox. Ran outside for the first time in weeks. These are definitely the dog days of winter w/ no chance of running in the daylight except for weekends.

Interval run on the TM: alternating 10 min fast and 5 min slow.  This makes 3 days of running in a row! I was virtually pain free today so I was able to go a bit longer. Hopefully the new year will see me turn a corner in my health and fitness to get back to where I was.

Last run of the year. Ran to the club for my usual weight training on my legs, ran 3M on the TM easy, then ran home. Feel like I've turned the corner on my health.  Looking forward to improving and enjoying running in 2012.
